Case Study

Oil Sands, Fort McMurray, Alberta

An independent consultant’s report indicated the presence of oil sand much farther east of Fort McMurray than was previously believed. An oil sands exploration company acquired a major land position in the area. Norwest was engaged to support their exploration programs, which were aimed at validating the concept.

Norwest led the collection, processing and interpretation of exploration data on our client’s Saskatchewan and Alberta lease holdings. The first exploration hole proved the concept and subsequent programs resulted in the discovery of a significant quantity of oil in place. Comprehensive data analysis led a detailed understanding of the nature of the basin’s eastern edge including the remapping of the regional oil/water contact.
