Meeting Surface And Groundwater Challenges

Surface and groundwater supply and quality issues can be complex and are surrounded by a variety of compliance regulations. Using our experience and technology, Norwest’s hydrology experts assess your situation and create a cost-effective, efficient strategic plan to address these challenges.

Norwest uses analytical and numerical modeling to evaluate surface and groundwater flow and quality. Using these techniques, Norwest professionals are able to analyze existing hydrogeologic conditions, and predict impacts of engineered interventions such as dewatering yield and drawdown. Modeling can be used for urban and rural stormwater runoff and water quality sampling.

Case Study

Water Supply Options, Western USA

Situation:

In the arid western US, it is sometimes a challenge to find water for industry. Norwest was charged with assessing water supply options for a planned large oil shale mining operation.

Solution:

In the arid western US, it is sometimes a challenge to find water for industry. Norwest was charged with assessing water supply options for a planned large oil shale mining operation. A 100-year stream flow record and comprehensive water rights research in two states were used to model the availability of water from an existing surface water water right, and the capacity of a reservoir required to guarantee supply over the life of the mine. Potential yield from deep aquifers was gauged from geophysical logs of existing gas wells, and a wellfield modeled.

Result:

Finally, a 55 mile pipeline was designed to deliver a secure supply from the Green River, with Ranney well intakes and a rolled concrete dam to hold a seven day reserve in the head of a ravine near the plant.
